Imām Ahmed Ibn Hanbal wrote,
“When a man proposes to a woman, he asks first about her beauty. If it is praised, he then asks about her religiosity and, if it is praised, he marries her. But if it isn’t praised, he refuses for the sake of [her] religiosity. He does not ask first about [her] religiosity and then, if it is praised, ask about beauty, since if it isn’t praised he would be rejecting her for the sake of [her] beauty, not the sake of [her] religiosity.”
